I’ve never found a chance where I could eat a plate of perfectly cooked carbonara. The one that is capable of making my heart palpitate in inexplianable proportions.
That is probably the reason why I try and try to make my won until I succeed. So far, I haven’t. This one however was good enough to make me giggle in defense. Defense of what I can’t say exactly. I have to tell you though it was good enough except the ham. The ham was really bad. Not that I can complain. I’m sure if I cooked the ham differently it might come out tolerable.
Here’s a picture of the said ham. It’s canned.Yes, I know what you’re thinking and I’m pretty sure you are correct. So I agree.
About the rest of the story. My initial plan was to make a tomato based pasta dish out of the buck wheat macaroni that cam from the same balikbayan box. When I was rummaging through the kitchen rack, my concern shifted on a tetra pack of Nestle cream purchased last December 31st. It’s not even close to the expiration date b ut I thought of no other chance to cook it sooner. I then decided to make a creamy carbonara.
2 cups Goody buck wheat macaroni
1 tetra pack Nestle cream (about 1 3/4 cups)
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp minced garlic
1/2 cup sliced ham
1/2 cup sliced button mushroom
1 tbsp butter
1/4 cup grated cheese
salt and pepper to taste
1 egg
Cook pasta according to package directions. Saute minced garlic in melted butter. Add sliced ham and sliced button mushrooms in medium heat. Leave for about 5 minutes. Pour a pack of Nestle cream; add the milk;add the cheese and stir to blend well. Lower the heat. Add the still warm pasta making sure the sauce coats it well. Season with salt an pepper. Turn heat off then quickly drop an egg stirring instantly to merge along with the rest of the ingredients. Serve warm.
Let me tell you an odd fact about me. I absolutely prefer cold pasta. It seems that a plate of well cooked and chilled pasta warms my heart extensively.
Maybe that’s one of the reasons why I haven’t found that specific carbonara yet.
Astonishing isn’t it? That I haven’t had that carbonara yet. Well not really I haven’t afterall been where it was created.
