That’s how I’d describe this week so far. Its not even the surviving bit that I’m worried about. I’d rather not go into details, besides, it doesn’t really matter, yes?
So anyways, allow me to focus on the things I did that I really liked.

  1. I went to Gillman Barracks. It’s an old military camp that was transformed by a private cum government organization into a gallery/restaurant area. I got there early afternoon and it was … quiet. I wasn’t hoping for people to be milling around however it felt abandoned at that hour. Turned out, the humans were either in the restaurants OR inside the galleries. So off I went to investigate. I was there to attend the 7X70 Dinner (we had fancy organic 3 course fare) hosted by NTU Centre for Contemporary Arts Singapore. i didn’t get to speak (properly) to the artists involved despite my fervent efforts. I got bored and started hoping I was somewhere else and wondered why the display included brooms when it was all about kitchen wares. Really, I have photos. I digress. I was seated way way back, perhaps because my ticket was free and I was alone. Something nice happened though, I got to meet and have an engaging conversation with locals (and one diplomat). So yeah, it wasn’t bad.

  1. Dropped by Esplanade, Theaters by the Bay. Dropped by the library, had my photo taken at the rooftop…it was a usual afternoon with my friend J. It did not feel like we haven’t seen each other for ten years.

I sampled local food. This I have to talk about. This probably deserves its own page but for now this will do.

  1. A friend, who’s been living here for some time now brought to Woodlands, a place called Killiney Kopitiam ( I think). She ordered two soft-boiled (1.5 minute eggs), kaya toast, paired with local coffee. Loved the coffee! At that time, my dislike for condensed milk in coffee hasn’t set in yet so it was fine. That’s how they prepare coffee anyways, so, no complaints. You had to break the eggs into a small bowl, add in soy sauce and white pepper, mix into a slurry then dunk in the fresh kaya toast. Again, I loved the coffee because it was smooth and full-bodied. I prefer an almost savory tasting cup most of the time but the coffee here you have to appreciate.

  1. Scissors Cut Curry Rice. It wasn’t as “amazing” or “superb” or “great” as it said on the reviews. Add to that the ill-mannered way I was treated. If I wasn’t tired or hungry and lugging a 20 kilo luggage I would’ve run. Oh, by the way, I was on the verge of crying while I ate. Also, seriously, the food isn’t that good and that is an honest opinion bad encounter notwithstanding.
  2. Two Chefs in Sin Ming. Now this dinner, I enjoyed. I have to thank my friend for this. We had (committed from my memory), a plate of lamb with vegetables, golden mushroom tofu, eggs with spinach, some noodles and the drink that has followed me around for days now…warm barley. Their warm barley was quite exceptional though, I have no idea why.

  1. On my way to sampling a better Hainanese Chicken rice etc.
  2. I also dropped by Little India.
